A cloud of smoke extends to the left behind Burke and Fox, it obscures a "Coal[i]tio[n]" beneath which sits Lord North in rags with a flag "America Lost" and an "M.T." purse. The smoke screen on the left contains several statements: "He has utterly ruined his country!" -- "Hold the man infamous that associates with him!" -- "Consider the man curst that goes over the threshold with him!" -- "We will not suffer him to escape" -- "We pledge ourselves to bring him to the Scaffold!!!" -- "We will not rest till we have brought him to the Block!!!"; the thunder and lightning (or the wind that has shifted from North to Hastings) contains flowers and dice; Burke and Fox, holding the cup, appear to have cast their lot with Hastings who looks alarmed.
