Simply replying, "I'm a graphic designer" can apparently have the same paralytic effect as anesthesia because the question that ALWAYS follows is, "Sooo, what do you do with that?" Well, how do you accurately describe creating "something" out of "nothing" without short circuiting one's brain? Creative people tend to scare others because they can't "see" or "visualize" or "touch" what we do. I certainly don't carry around my portfolio to every pool party or social gathering just as a surgeon doesn't carry around his/her scalpel. I now try to look at it like a recipe, which most people can follow. INGREDIENTS: One part spark, a dash of whim, slice of humor, some balance, lots of organization, one Adobe Creative Suite, thousands of fonts (but pick out the comic sans, it's bitter), loads and loads of caffeine. Whirl together to form an idea...but by now their eyes have glazed over and they're either comatose or dead. This graphic designer (that's me) works only in print; things you can see and touch, so no, don't ask me to do your website and for the love of pickles don't ask me to fix your computer! I can literally repel technology.
